Hidden Behind Trees - Binary Records (EP - June 06, 2011)
Described as "deliciously sweet Glo-Fi basement party jams," Denver
natives Ethan Converse and Sam Martin are electronic duo Flashlights.
New to electronic production, Ethan and Sam started Flashlights as a way
to explore their desire to make warm, summertime music while trapped in
the cold Denver winter. The lush soundscapes and pop twinged
melodies hint just as much to great Brit-pop of yesteryear as they do
to more recent contemporaries such as Teen Daze or Memoryhouse. On their
debut EP "Hidden Behind Trees", Flashlights reaches for tropical
climes, but at times can do little to hide the darkness that comes with
being trapped within a cold winter. Its this dichotomy, creating an
honest push and pull between light and dark moods, that allows
Flashlights to stand out from their peers. With their standout single
"Holidays", bouncing electronic chords lay the groundwork for Converse's
floating vocals, creating a song that feels bright and dark at the same
time. "Glowing Eyes" at times sounds almost apocalyptic in nature with
its growling and driving bassline, all the while tying the record
together with its stick-in-your-head singable chorus. Constructive,
multi-layered songwriting suggest that the band is just getting started.
Named one of Westword Magazines 12 acts to watch in 2011, featured in
NME's Buzzworthy Artists, as well as playing high profile shows with
Toro Y Moi, Millionyoung, and Miami Horror, Flashlights is set to hit
the festival circuit this summer while beginning work on their followup
to "Hidden Behind Trees".
