The smooth-groovin’ space-funk acid-jazz of Venezuela-born Los Amigos Invisibles has been causing listeners to bust out disco moves since 1991, even though the band didn’t record its first album, A Typical and Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band, till 1995. Signed to David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label in ’96, LAI continued to build fans in Latin America and elsewhere with their infectious party music, as heard on two more albums, The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera and Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey into Space.

Eventually, they relocated to New York, and in 2004, released The Venezuelan Zinga Son, Vol. 1, which earned them Latin Grammy nominations. Their 2006 release, Superpop Venezuela, produced by Dmitri from Paris for Gozadera Records, picked up a nomination for Best Urban Latin Alternative Album. But it was 2009’s Commercial, their sixth studio album, that won them a Latin Grammy (for Best Alternative Album). Nineteen years after they started, the six-man band has played in 60 countries and is hotter than ever.
